Fighting Internet Spam

Spam has grown to such an extent that internet users have started to suffer from lack of confidence in emails as a mode of communication and even the spread of computer virus is another area of disturbance. The Can Spam bill was signed by president Bush in 2003. Voted by the Senate by a vote of 97 to 0 this bill bans senders of unsolicited and commercial emails which carry wrong return addresses to hide their identities and using dictionaries to create such mailers. While any violation of the law is treated as a criminal offence and can mean up to one year in prison, the sender is also not allowed to gather addresses from different websites.
One major point that needs to be discussed about this: spam is now coming from other countries in ever-greater numbers. Since such emails originate from other countries, it is nearly impossible to control them. Because the internet has thrown open all geographical barriers, these laws can not erase the problem. Are there any rules which can save you from the situation? Use these 5 rules for protection against spam?
Number 1: Do everything possible to stop your email address reaching the internet. The email addresses are collected by products called ’spam spider’ which then use them for dispatching spam mails. To fight the menace of ’spambots’ and ’spam spiders’ effectively there is a combative site called WebPoison.org which simply sends them absurd web pages along with nonsensical email address.
Number 2: You could install a software which blocks spam and there are plenty of programs which could get you started on this. Whatever you like getting a professional version, etc, get the software if you wish to save on time. It must be noted that the software is not capable of preventing all that is going wrong and some manual set up might be needed to block some specific types of emails.
Number 3: Take the approach of having many email addresses. Having plenty of email addresses could mean that you use them for specific communications and have another few as back ups. It is something like providing your personal cell number to only your friends but all others have to contact you through your business number.
Number 4: One of the biggest problems with spam is the attachment which is an usual feature and these attachments could carry the viruses. However personal emails are what the spammers are aiming at. Firewall developers offer this type of service as well.
Number 5: Did you know that email service providers are now offering ‘bulk mail’ baskets? This idea is easily workable. If you know someone, they can send you emails, if you don’t know them, put them in the bulk email pile and then ‘choose’ to allow them into your circle. This is similar to what most software spam-blockers do but it’s always worth to be extra cautious.
